Anti-ageing advice
Do's and Don'ts
- Don’t sunbathe – a regular dose of the sun’s rays can add up to 20 years
- Stay away from sun beds – the media hype is actually true. Sun beds are not a 'safe' alternative to sunshine, they give out UV rays just like the sun, which damages the DNA in your skin cells and can cause cancer. In fact, the intensity of some types of UV rays from sun beds can be up to 10-15 times higher than that of the midday sun.
- Don’t get stressed – try to relax – a stressful lifestyle can age you up to three years.
- Don’t live in a big city – the hustle and bustle of city life can age you by five years (unless you use a cream packed full of anti-oxidants to protect the skin from free radicals in the environment)
- Don’t crash diet – all that self denial ages you up to ten years!]
What happens to your skin as you age?
- Hyperpigmentation – this is where spots start to appear, usually as a result of UV exposure. It’s also due to a loss of the cells which produce melanin - which protects your skin against UV exposure. On average, we lose six percent of these cells every decade after the age of 30.
- Appearance of broken veins, caused by dilated blood vessels. These start to show up more as the skin starts to get thinner.
- Cell turnover slows down by as much as 30-50% between the age of 30 and 80 – this can cause dull looking, coarser skin.
- Collagen and elastin fibres start to break down due to exposure to the UVB which reduces the skin’s natural elasticity and strength.
